I’ve never been able to fine a BBQ sauce from the store that was just right. They’re either too sweet, not spicy enough, I don’t like the consistency, etc. I started making my own at home so I could get it just right. I also make big batches and can it which saves money and I always have some stocked up.

Making your own BBQ sauce isn’t hard at all; in fact, it’s very simple. I start by sautéing minced garlic then add all the other ingredients, simmer for a bit and it’s done.

I like to use a garlic press to make mincing that garlic easier.

Canning BBQ sauce is also very easy, all you need is a few tools:

·      Sanitized canning jars & lids (for this I just pint sized)

·      Large stock pot with a round bottling rack

·      Funnel

·      Canning tongs to lift the jars out of the boiling water

For canning, I like to triple the recipe. It will yield about 5 pints of sauce.

I use an emersion blender to get the sauce nice and smooth.

To can the BBQ sauce, pour the sauce through the funnel into each jar leaving about an inch from the top. Take a wooden spoon and stir the sauce to remove any air bubbles. Next, put the lids on and tighten them hand tight. Using the canning tongs, lower the jars onto the rack in the boiling water ensuring the jars are covered by 2 inches of water. Boil for 15 minutes then take the jars out and let cool until you hear the lids pop. Make sure that when you press down on the top of the lid it doesn’t spring back up. Tighten the jar lids. The jars can be stored in your pantry and will last for several years.

I absolutely love being able to can my own BBQ sauce and have whenever I need it. Since Christmas is coming up, I plan on giving out jars as gifts…you won’t be getting any gift cards from this guy!

  1. that recipe is very, very similiar to the Josh Bulluck barbecue sauce that was very popular when it was sold here and the surrounding area in the 50’s -70’s. Josh Bulluck had a barbecue restaurant on Cokey Rd similiar to Bob Melton’s or Buck Overton’s when Rocky Mount was the king of barbecue.
